Biography & Historical Record
Zhang Shun, known by his epithet ‘White Streak in the Waves’, is a central character in the classic Chinese novel Water Margin. A native of Jieyang, he makes his living as a fisherman and acts as a local crime boss in the river regions. He is characterized by his superhuman swimming abilities, often described as moving through the water with the grace and speed of a white fish. His physical prowess and loyalty to his sworn brothers make him a critical asset for the Liangshan rebels.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While Zhang Shun does not appear in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, he occupies a position in Water Margin equivalent to the elite water-warfare experts of the Three Kingdoms period, such as Gan Ning (甘宁, Cam Ninh). His underwater combat skills were instrumental in several Liangshan victories, notably the capture of enemies who relied on riverine defenses.
