Yang Lin: The Multicolored Leopard
Yang Lin, nicknamed the “Multicolored Leopard” (Jin Baozi), is a memorable character in the classic Chinese literary masterpiece Water Margin. Set against the turbulent backdrop of the late Northern Song Dynasty, he ranks 51st among the 108 Liangshan heroes and 15th among the 72 Earthly Fiends. Hailing from Zhangde Prefecture, he wandered the martial world as a skilled vagabond proficient with the pen-cut spear. His exceptional keenness and agility made him an indispensable scout for the outlaw stronghold.
Unlike many outlaws driven to rebellion by imperial persecution, the warrior joined Liangshan through sheer camaraderie. His initial breakthrough occurred when he encountered Dai Zong, the “Magic Traveller,” along the roads of Jizhou. Recognizing Dai Zong’s unique talents, the wandering martial artist pledged his allegiance and helped recruit several key allies from Yinma River, including Pei Xuan, Deng Fei, and Meng Kang. This recruitment bolstered Liangshan’s administrative and combat ranks significantly.
Military Exploits and Life After War
During major campaigns, the outlaw scout took on perilous reconnaissance missions behind enemy lines. Notably, he disguised himself as a wandering Taoist during the assault on the Zhu Family Village to map their intricate labyrinth of fortifications. Although captured during a fierce clash, his reconnaissance laid the groundwork for Song Jiang’s ultimate triumph. Throughout expeditions against the Liao invaders and rebel factions like Fang La, Yang Lin served diligently in the cavalry vanguard.
Following the suppression of Fang La’s rebellion, many Liangshan heroes perished or faced bitter political intrigue. In contrast, the Multicolored Leopard chose a path of peaceful obscurity. Declining imperial appointments and court honors, Yang Lin returned safely to Zhangde Prefecture to live out his remaining days in tranquil retirement as a common citizen.
