The Legend of Yan Shun in Water Margin
Yan Shun, famously nicknamed the “Brocade-Clothed Tiger,” is a memorable outlaw chieftain in the classic Chinese novel Water Margin. Set during the turbulent era of the Northern Song Dynasty, his journey illustrates how a ruined livestock trader transformed into a prominent warrior of the outlaw brotherhood.
Hailing from Laizhou, he initially made a living dealing in horses and livestock. After suffering financial ruin and exhausting his capital, he was forced into banditry to survive. Establishing his base at Mount Qingfeng, he became the senior chieftain of the stronghold, co-ruling alongside his trusted associates Wang Ying and Zheng Tianshou. Renowned for his fierce disposition, crimson beard, and martial strength, he held an uncompromising code of loyalty toward his allies.
Rise to Liangshan Marsh
After swearing allegiance to Song Jiang, Yan Shun relocated his forces to Liangshan Marsh to bolster the grand rebellion. His martial skill and cavalry leadership proved vital in several tactical raids against imperial garrisons.
Following the assembly of the 108 Stars of Destiny, he assumed the title of the Earthly Brave Star and ranked 50th among the heroes. Stationed as a cavalry commander, he participated faithfully in campaigns to defend the marsh and later fought in state-sanctioned expeditions following imperial amnesty.
