Biography & Historical Record
Cao Zheng (曹正, Tào Chính) is a minor character in the classic Chinese novel Water Margin. Originally a butcher from the Eastern Capital of Kaifeng, he is known for his skill with a cleaver and his surprisingly capable martial arts prowess. Before joining the outlaws, he operated a butcher shop where he became acquainted with Lin Chong (林沖, Lâm Xung). Cao Zheng is famously credited with saving the life of Lin Chong when the latter was being escorted to exile and was nearly murdered by his guards. After his own business failed, he was recruited by the bandit leaders of Erlong Mountain. He later joins the main Liangshan (梁山, Lương Sơn) cause, where he serves as a scout and, most importantly, as one of the primary providers of food and supplies for the encampment due to his experience in the slaughterhouse and food trade.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While Cao Zheng does not appear in Romance of the Three Kingdoms as he is a character from the Song Dynasty, his archetype as a ‘rough but loyal’ tradesman mirror many historical figures in the Three Kingdoms era who transitioned from common labor to military support roles. His ‘Knife-Wielding Demon’ title reflects the terrifying efficiency he brought to both the butcher’s block and the battlefield.
