Biography & Historical Record
Du Qian (杜迁, Đỗ Thiên), nicknamed ‘Cloud-Touching Devil’ (Mạc Già Già), is one of the 108 Stars of Destiny in the classic Chinese novel Water Margin. He was one of the original founders of the bandit stronghold on Mount Liang (Liangshan Marsh), alongside Wang Lun (王伦, Vương Luân) and Song Wan (宋万, Tống Vạn). Despite being a founding member, Du Qian is often depicted as having average martial prowess compared to later arrivals, leading to his relatively low ranking as the 83rd star, the Earth Evil Star (Địa Yêu Tinh).
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While Du Qian does not appear in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, his archetype as a bandit chieftain mirrors the minor warlords of the Han Dynasty transition period, representing the localized power structures that arose when central authority crumbled.
