Biography & Historical Record
Tang Long (汤隆, Thang Long) is a character from the classic Chinese novel Water Margin. Originally a blacksmith from Yizhou, he possessed significant skill in forging weapons and armor. He is widely recognized for his unique appearance, characterized by a pockmarked face and a muscular build, which earned him the nickname ‘Golden Qianbao’ (Golden Leopard). Despite his humble background, his expertise in weaponry proved invaluable to the Liangshan cause. He is credited with introducing Xu Ning (徐宁, Từ Ninh) to the brotherhood, facilitating the capture of the famous ‘Haotian’ chain-linked armor, which was essential for defeating the cavalry of the Song army.
Role in Water Margin
‘A man of iron craft and fierce loyalty, whose hammer forged the destiny of heroes.’
Tang Long joined the Liangshan outlaws after being recruited by Li Kui (李逵, Lý Quỳ), who sought his help to lure his cousin Xu Ning (徐宁, Từ Ninh) into joining the ranks. Tang Long’s most notable contribution was his technical ingenuity in designing the ‘hook-lance’ tactics (钩镰枪, Gōuliánqiāng) to counter the heavy cavalry of the imperial forces. Throughout the later campaigns, he served as the primary armorer, ensuring the maintenance and repair of the heroes’ equipment. He eventually met his end during the bitter struggle against the forces of Fang La (方腊, Phương Lạp).
