Biography & Historical Record
Pang Huan (庞涣, Bàng Hoán), courtesy name Shiwen (世文), was an illustrious scholar-official of Jingzhou serving during the late Cao Wei and early Western Jin periods. He was the son of Pang Shanmin (庞山民 — Vice Minister of the Yellow Gate under Cao Wei) and the grandson of the venerable hermit sage Pang Degong (庞德公, Bàng Đức Công — who famously bestowed the nicknames “Sleeping Dragon” on Zhuge Liang and “Fledgling Phoenix” on Pang Tong).
Crucially, Pang Huan was the nephew of Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮, Gia Cát Lượng) by marriage, as his mother was Zhuge Liang’s elder sister (Lady Zhuge). Embodying the finest traditions of Jingzhou’s elite scholarly houses, Pang Huan possessed exceptional character, eloquent diplomatic grace, and profound administrative virtue. Serving under the Western Jin administration, he was appointed Administrator of Quanling (牂牁/泉陵太守). In office, his benevolent governance pacified the southern populace, fostered agriculture, and rebuilt schools, earning him universal admiration across the Xiangyang region.
Role in Romance & Historical Chronicles
“The bloodline of Pang Degong and the house of Zhuge Liang united in Pang Huan; his governance in Quanling shone with the purity of the Han River and the wisdom of the Wolong ridge.”
— Xiangyang Qijiu Ji (Biographies of Xiangyang Elders)
Pang Huan is celebrated in regional historical annals as the living embodiment of the historic marriage alliance between the two greatest intellectual dynasties of the Three Kingdoms era.
