Guo Youzhi

Guo Youzhi was a distinguished official and statesman of the state of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period. A native of Nanyang in Jing Province, he was widely recognized in his youth for his sharp intellect, high moral character, and vast knowledge. During the early years of Liu Bei’s administration following the conquest of Yi Province, Guo Youzhi, alongside Fei Yi and Dong Yun, was highly prized by Liu Bei as a key talent and foundational pillar for the future of his state. In 224 AD, he was appointed to the prestigious positions of Gentleman of the Yellow Gate and Palace Attendant.

As a trusted core advisor, Guo Youzhi was instrumental in the civilian administration of Shu Han. Imperial Chancellor Zhuge Liang held him in high esteem, famously praising him in his celebrated memorial, the Chu Shi Biao (First Report on the Expedition), as being exceedingly loyal, honest, and faithful. Zhuge Liang specifically advised the young emperor Liu Shan to rely heavily on the guidance and integrity of Guo Youzhi, Fei Yi, and Dong Yun for the internal stability of the state. Throughout his career, Guo Youzhi remained a steadfast servant of Liu Shan, consistently opposing the aggressive military campaigns of Jiang Wei and the rising political corruption and influence of the eunuch Huang Hao. Despite being unjustly criticized by the disgruntled official Liao Li, Guo Youzhi maintained an unblemished reputation for diligence and professional excellence. He continued his dedicated service to the Shu court until his passing.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

In Luo Guanzhong’s epic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Guo Youzhi makes his first notable appearance in Chapter 91. Following the southern pacification campaigns, Zhuge Liang includes Guo Youzhi, Fei Yi, and Dong Yun in his famous memorial presented to Emperor Liu Shan, highlighting them as loyal and worthy talents who should be entrusted with important administrative duties to protect the state. His role in the novel is primarily that of a principled civil official and palace advisor who provides wise counsel to the imperial court. He is subsequently dispatched alongside Fei Yi and Dong Yun to manage sensitive administrative and domestic matters within the Imperial Palace, further cementing his reputation as a pillar of Shu’s civil government.
