Biography & Historical Record
Zhang Pu was a military officer who served under the warlord Gongsun Yuan during the late Three Kingdoms period. When Gongsun Yuan declared himself the King of Yan and revolted against the state of Cao Wei in 237 AD, Zhang Pu was appointed as a senior officer in the Yan military forces, assisting in the defense of Liaodong.
In 238 AD, Regent Sima Yi led a grand punitive expedition of 40,000 Cao Wei troops to crush Gongsun Yuan’s rebellion. Gongsun Yuan dispatched his top generals Bei Yan and Yang Huai to construct a formidable 20-li defensive encampment along the Liaoshui River to block the Wei army’s advance. Zhang Pu served as a subordinate commander under Bei Yan and Yang Huai, helping maintain the river defenses and fortified camps. However, Sima Yi executed a brilliant feint, making a show of attacking the main Liaoshui encampment while secretly marching his army further south across the river to strike directly at Xiangping, the capital of Yan.
Realizing that their capital was in danger, Bei Yan, Yang Huai, and Zhang Pu abandoned their river encampment and pursued Sima Yi’s force. Sima Yi ambushed and routed them at Mount Shou, surrounding Xiangping. During the siege, as famine struck the city and Liaodong forces collapsed, Zhang Pu was killed in the chaotic fighting when Wei forces stormed Xiangping and eliminated Gongsun Yuan’s regime.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zhang Pu appears in Chapter 106 as a general under Gongsun Yuan when Sima Yi campaigns against Liaodong. Serving as a subordinate general alongside Bei Yan, Zhang Pu assists in commanding 150,000 troops stationed along the Liaoshui River to construct deep trenches and high barricades. Sima Yi outmaneuvers the Liaodong army by crossing the river at a different point and marching directly toward Xiangping. Zhang Pu and Bei Yan give chase, but Sima Yi sets a ambush near Mount Shou. In the ensuing clash, Sima Yi’s vanguard defeats the Liaodong forces, leading to the encirclement and ultimate downfall of Xiangping.
