Biography & Historical Record
Zhang Hu was a military general serving the state of Cao Wei during the Three Kingdoms period. Born in Mayi, Yanmen Commandery (present-day Shuanyuan, Shanxi Province), he was the son of Zhang Liao, one of Cao Cao’s legendary Five Elite Generals. Inheriting his father’s noble rank as Marquis of Jinyang upon Zhang Liao’s death in 222 AD, Zhang Hu was raised at court and served in the imperial army.
In his military career, Zhang Hu served as an officer under Sima Yi during the defensive campaigns against Shu Han’s Northern Expeditions led by Zhuge Liang, and later during the suppression of Gongsun Yuan’s rebellion in Liaodong. Stationed along the western border alongside his close friend and fellow second-generation vanguard commander Yue Chen (son of Yue Jin), Zhang Hu was frequently deployed to lead elite detachments, defend mountain passes, and execute tactical ambushes against Shu and Wu forces.
Historically, Zhang Hu reached the military rank of General Who Displays Valor (Pangwei Jiangjun). Following his death, his noble title and lineage were inherited by his son Zhang Tong.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zhang Hu appears prominently from Chapters 98 through 106 as a brave vanguard commander under Sima Yi, almost always paired with Yue Chen. Portrayed as valiant heirs carrying on their famous fathers’ battlefield legacies, Zhang Hu and Yue Chen act as Sima Yi’s primary strike force. In Chapter 99, during Zhuge Liang’s Third Northern Expedition, Zhang Hu and Yue Chen fight in single combat against Shu generals Wu Yi and Wu Ban. Later, in Chapter 101, during a tactical formation clash, Zhang Hu and Yue Chen attempt to charge Zhuge Liang’s Bagua (Eight Trigrams) array, only to be outmaneuvered and trapped. Zhuge Liang spares their lives, stripping them of their armor and weapons and painting their faces with ink before releasing them back to Sima Yi’s camp as a humiliation. Undeterred, Zhang Hu continues to serve valiantly, later leading a naval assault alongside Yue Chen during Sima Yi’s northern expedition against Gongsun Yuan in Liaodong.
