Cao Wenshu

Cao Wenshu (courtesy name Wenshu) was a noble member of the imperial Cao clan during the Three Kingdoms period of China. He was the son of Cao Hai, making him a close cousin or clan relative of Grand General Cao Shuang, who controlled the regency of Cao Wei from 239 to 249 AD. Born into high aristocracy, Cao Wenshu married Xiahou Lingnu, the daughter of official Xiahou Wengai, in a politically prominent union between the two founding clans of Cao Wei—the Cao and Xiahou families.

Cao Wenshu’s life in historical records was brief, as he suffered from chronic illness and passed away at a very young age shortly after his marriage. The couple had no children prior to his premature death, leaving his young widow, Xiahou Lingnu, isolated in the Cao household.

Although Cao Wenshu did not achieve military or political renown during his short life, his memory became the central catalyst for one of the most celebrated historical accounts of female fidelity and moral fortitude in ancient China. Following Sima Yi’s coup d’état at the Gaoping Tombs in 249 AD, Cao Shuang’s entire clan was exterminated to the third degree. Seeing the utter ruin of the Cao family, Xiahou Lingnu’s father and uncle attempted to force her to renounce her mourning vows and remarry into a powerful clan. Demonstrating unyielding devotion to Cao Wenshu, Xiahou Lingnu severely mutilated herself—first cutting off her ears and later slicing off her nose with a knife—declaring that she would never abandon her dead husband or desert a family simply because it had fallen from power. Deeply moved by her virtue when informed of her extreme sacrifice, Grand Tutor Sima Yi praised her loyalty, granted her an official pardon, restored her husband’s family estate, and permitted her to adopt a son to carry on Cao Wenshu’s ancestral lineage forever.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Cao Wenshu is featured through retrospection in Chapter 107 following Sima Yi’s bloody purge of Cao Shuang and his relatives. The novel highlights the tragic aftermath of his early death and the extreme virtue of his widow, Xiahou Lingnu. When her father pressures her to break her marriage oath and remarry after the extermination of the Cao family, Xiahou Lingnu disfigures herself by cutting off her ears and nose, declaring: ‘I remained faithful when the Cao clan was prosperous; how could I abandon them now in their ruin?’ Moved to tears by her righteous devotion to her deceased husband, Sima Yi praises her moral fortitude, restores Cao Wenshu’s ancestral property, and allows her to adopt an heir to perpetuate Cao Wenshu’s name.
