Biography & Historical Record
Ahui Nan was a tribal chieftain and a high-ranking military commander serving under the King of the Southern Tribes, Meng Huo (孟獲, Mạnh Hoạch). He is historically recognized as one of the three principal commanders alongside Dong Tu Na (董荼那, Đổng Đồ Na) and Jin Huan San Jie (金環三結, Kim Hoàn Tam Kết). During the Nanzhong campaign, his role was to defend the southern territories against the invading forces of the Shu Han (蜀漢, Thục Hán) state led by the Chancellor Zhuge Liang (諸葛亮, Gia Cát Lượng).
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
“The three generals, Dong Tu Na, Ahui Nan, and Jin Huan San Jie, were fierce warriors of the south. They led their troops to confront the Shu forces with unmatched ferocity, believing the terrain would be their greatest ally.”
In the narrative, Ahui Nan serves as a foil to the tactical brilliance of Zhuge Liang. Following the defeat and capture of Jin Huan San Jie, Ahui Nan and Dong Tu Na were sent to intercept the Shu army. They were eventually defeated in a night ambush. In a later plot orchestrated by Zhuge Liang, the Shu Chancellor released Ahui Nan and Dong Tu Na after capturing them, hoping to sow discord among the southern ranks. Upon returning to Meng Huo (孟獲, Mạnh Hoạch), their claims of mercy from the enemy led to accusations of treachery. Consequently, Meng Huo ordered their execution, highlighting the internal fragility and suspicious nature of the Southern alliance.
