Biography & Historical Record
Chang Shu (常恕, Thường Thứ) was an esteemed civil official, magistrate, and legal scholar of the state of Cao Wei during the Three Kingdoms period. Hailing from Wen County, Henei Commandery, Chang Shu was the son of Chang Lin (常林, Thường Lâm), the renowned Minister of Works (Sikong), Grand Tutor, and incorruptible statesman under Cao Cao and Cao Pi.
Raised in an atmosphere of strict Confucian probity and judicial impartiality, Chang Shu followed in his father’s illustrious footsteps. He served as a commandery administrator and prefectural magistrate, earning high acclaim for his fair handling of penal codes, agricultural rehabilitation, and upright refusal to accept bribes. When powerful gentry clans attempted to intimidate local magistrates, Chang Shu stood firm upon imperial statute, winning the affection of the common peasantry and the respect of the central court. His brother Chang Ji (常忌) was similarly renowned for scholarly depth.
