Biography & Historical Record
Chen Qiu (陈球, 陳球, Trần Cầu; 118–179 AD), courtesy name Boji (伯姬, Bá Cơ), was a premier statesman, military commander, and Grand Commandant (太尉) of the Eastern Han dynasty. Hailing from Huaiyin in Xiapi Commandery, he belonged to the illustrious Xiapi Chen clan, being the uncle of Minister Chen Gui (陈珪) and grand-uncle of strategist Chen Deng (陈登).
Renowned for his legal mastery and tactical ingenuity, Chen Qiu was appointed Administrator of Lingling in 165 AD when indigenous tribal insurgencies overwhelmed southern commanderies. Besieged in Lingling for over ten days, Chen Qiu devised innovative crossbow artillery and subterranean counter-tunnels, completely routing tens of thousands of rebels. Promoted through imperial ranks, he served as Minister of Justice (廷尉), Minister of Works (司空), and ultimately Grand Commandant (太尉) under Emperor Ling.
In 179 AD, outraged by the rampant corruption of eunuch dictators Cao Jie and Cheng Huang, Chen Qiu secretly allied with Imperial Clansman Liu He and Minister of the Household Yang Qiu to impeach the eunuchs and execute their faction. However, the plot was betrayed. The eunuchs counter-attacked, arresting Chen Qiu and imprisoning him in the imperial dungeons of Luoyang, where he perished with unbending loyalty at the age of sixty-two.
