Biography & Historical Record
Deng Lang (邓朗, Đặng Lãng), courtesy name Bodao (伯道), was a distinguished nobleman and civil administrator of the Western Jin Dynasty. He was the son (or grandson/heir) of Deng Ai (邓艾, Đặng Ngải — Grand General of Cao Wei and supreme conqueror of Shu Han, who scaled the precipitous Yinping mountains to capture Chengdu in 263 AD).
In 264 AD, following the tragic framing and murder of Deng Ai and his eldest son Deng Zhong by Zhong Hui and Wei Guan, the surviving members of the Deng family were exiled to the harsh frontiers of Western Liangzhou. In 273 AD, following passionate petitions by loyal ministers like Duan Zhuo, Emperor Wu of Jin (Sima Yan) formally cleared Deng Ai of treason, praised his immortal conquest, and restored his family’s noble honors. Deng Lang was summoned from exile, inherited his grandfather’s noble titles, and was appointed Administrator of Nanyang (南阳太守). Serving with great diligence and filial piety, Deng Lang restored the ancestral Deng estates and governed Nanyang with wisdom.
