Biography & Historical Record
Dong Ping (董平, Đổng Bình) is a fictional character in the classical Chinese novel Water Margin. Before joining the Liangshan outlaws, he served as a military commander in Dongping Prefecture. He was renowned for his exceptional skill with his signature dual spears, earning him the nickname ‘Double Spear General’ (Song Chuang Jiang). He is ranked 15th among the 108 Stars of Destiny, designated as the ‘Heavenly Valiant Star’ (Tianli Xing). Dong Ping was noted not only for his martial prowess but also for his arrogance and his proficiency in literature and music, distinguishing him from many other martial-focused heroes in the novel.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
‘He is truly a peerless warrior, unmatched in the use of dual spears; a man who carries the weight of a hundred men on his shoulders.’ — A description attributed to the tactical evaluation of his combat style.
While Dong Ping does not appear in the historical Romance of the Three Kingdoms, his character archetype in Water Margin serves as a template for the legendary warriors of historical fiction. His journey began when he was captured by the Liangshan heroes after being lured into a trap. Upon joining the outlaws, he became a critical pillar of their military strength. During the final campaigns of the Liangshan forces against the Fang La (方臘, Phương Lạp) rebellion, Dong Ping met a tragic end at the Duju Pass. While attempting to storm the pass, he was wounded and subsequently slain by the enemy general Zhang Qing (張清, Trương Thanh).
