Biography & Historical Record
Du Yuan (died 200 AD) is a fictional bandit chieftain appearing in Luo Guanzhong’s classic historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Depicted as a former officer of the Yellow Turban Rebels who turned to highway robbery following the collapse of the peasant uprising, Du Yuan established a mountain stronghold alongside his comrade Liao Hua to prey upon passing travelers and caravans.
In 200 AD, during Guan Yu’s heroic journey escorting Liu Bei’s two wives (Lady Gan and Lady Mi) from Xuchang to rejoin Liu Bei, Du Yuan and Liao Hua led hundreds of mountain bandits in a sudden raid on the carriage convoy while Guan Yu was leading the advance guard. Du Yuan captured Lady Gan and Lady Mi along with their entire luggage train and brought them up to the mountain fortress. Overcome with lust upon seeing their extraordinary beauty, Du Yuan proposed to Liao Hua that they split the two noblewomen between themselves as mountain chief wives. However, Liao Hua, possessing a deep sense of righteousness, questioned their identities and discovered they were the imperial wives of Guan Yu and Liu Bei. Liao Hua strongly rebuked Du Yuan, urging him to show respect to the royal lineage and escort the ladies back down the mountain to Guan Yu. Driven by greed and lust, Du Yuan stubbornly refused Liao Hua’s advice and attempted to claim the ladies by force. Infuriated by Du Yuan’s dishonorable behavior, Liao Hua drew his sword and decapitated Du Yuan on the spot, ending the bandit chieftain’s life.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Du Yuan is featured in Chapter 27 as a literary foil created to highlight the righteous integrity of Liao Hua. His villainous attempt to violate Liu Bei’s wives and his subsequent execution by Liao Hua serve a key narrative function, introducing Liao Hua as a loyal, honorable warrior who would go on to serve Shu Han until its final collapse.
