Historical Career
Han Zhong was a native of Nanyang Commandery in Jing Province and rose among the Yellow Turban forces of the region. After Zhang Mancheng and later Zhao Hong were killed, the remnant rebels at Wan chose Han Zhong as their new leader. He reoccupied the city and again opposed the imperial commander Zhu Jun. Zhu Jun first feinted an attack on the southwest with drums and battle-cries; when Han Zhong committed his main force there, Zhu Jun led picked troops against the northeast, scaled the walls and entered the city. Han Zhong retreated into the citadel and offered to surrender. Zhu Jun refused, declaring that the complete destruction of the rebels would serve as a warning. After further fighting Zhu Jun relaxed the siege on one side; Han Zhong’s men came out, were ambushed, and Han Zhong was killed. Some accounts also note that he was later said to have been slain by Qin Xie of Nanyang, but the decisive engagement was against Zhu Jun’s army in late 184 / early 185.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms Portrayal
The novel places the episode immediately after the main Yellow Turban campaigns. Three remnant leaders—Zhao Hong, Han Zhong and Sun Zhong—gather tens of thousands, burn and plunder, and claim to avenge Zhang Jue. The court orders Zhu Jun to finish them. At Wan, Zhao Hong first sends Han Zhong out to fight. Zhu Jun dispatches Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei against the southwest corner while he himself strikes the northeast with two thousand iron cavalry. The rebels, fearing the loss of the city, abandon the southwest; Liu Bei attacks from the rear and drives them back inside. The city is surrounded and runs short of grain. Han Zhong offers to surrender; Zhu Jun, on principle, refuses. Following Liu Bei’s advice he withdraws troops from the southeast and concentrates on the northwest. Han Zhong, taking the bait, leads his men out of the city and is shot dead in the ensuing pursuit. The remaining forces under Zhao Hong and Sun Zhong briefly retake the city before being finally crushed (Zhao Hong killed by Sun Jian, Sun Zhong by Liu Bei’s arrow).

Historical Note
Han Zhong was one of the secondary Yellow Turban commanders who prolonged the rebellion in Nanyang after the main leaders had fallen. His brief tenure at Wan Castle and death at the hands of Zhu Jun’s forces illustrate the final suppression of the major Yellow Turban strongholds in 184–185. The novel compresses the campaign into a single dramatic sequence involving Liu Bei’s brothers, a refused surrender, and an arrow-shot death, thereby giving the minor rebel a clear narrative exit while emphasising Zhu Jun’s severity and Liu Bei’s early military experience.
