Biography & Historical Record
Huan Hai (桓海, Hoàn Hải) was a noble scion and court gentleman of Cao Wei. Hailing from Longkang County in Pei Commandery, he was the son of Huan Fan (桓范), the famous Minister of Finance (Da Sinong) widely known among his contemporaries as the “Bag of Wisdom” (智囊).
Reared in an aristocratic household renowned for brilliant administrative planning, state fiscal policies, and strategic treatises, Huan Hai received rigorous classical training in statecraft. However, his life was tragically cut short in the vortex of dynastic coup d’état. In 249 AD, when Sima Yi launched the Gaoping Tombs Incident to seize absolute power from Regent Cao Shuang, Huan Fan risked his life to deliver the imperial seal to the emperor’s camp, offering flawless strategic counsel that Cao Shuang cowardly ignored.
Following Cao Shuang’s unconditional surrender, Sima Yi ruthlessly purged his entire faction. Huan Hai was arrested alongside his father and executed as part of the total extermination of Huan Fan’s three familial generations, a poignant symbol of the tragic fall of the Cao Wei loyalist ministers.
