Biography & Historical Record
Lady Meng (孟母, Mạnh mẫu — Mother of Meng Zong) was a celebrated moral matriarch of Eastern Wu (东吴) during the Three Kingdoms period. She was the mother of Meng Zong (孟宗, Mạnh Tông — courtesy name Gongwu, later renamed Meng Ren), who rose through upright merit to become Minister of Works (Sikong / 司空) of Eastern Wu and is immortalized in China’s Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars (二十四孝) for the legend of “Crying over Bamboo to Sprout Shoots in Winter” (哭竹生笋).
Widowed at an early age in Jiangxia, Lady Meng raised Meng Zong under severe poverty with unyielding discipline and profound ethical instruction. Recognizing her son’s boundless potential, she sent him to study under the eminent scholar Li Ji in Nanyang. During cold winters, she hand-stitched heavy padded blankets for his fellow impoverished classmates, teaching Meng Zong that true scholarship required empathy for the destitute. When Meng Zong took his first government post and sent his mother a jar of cured fish, Lady Meng sternly returned the gift, reprimanding him that an upright official must never use his public office to enrich his family. Under her virtuous maternal tutelage, Meng Zong became one of the most incorruptible and beloved statesmen of the Three Kingdoms era.

— The Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars
In Chinese cultural tradition, Lady Meng is venerated alongside the Mother of Mencius and the Mother of Yue Fei as one of the ultimate historical archetypes of wise and upright motherhood (贤母).
