Biography & Historical Record
Lady Zhong (钟氏, Chung thị) was an aristocratic noblewoman and matriarch of the late Eastern Han Dynasty and Cao Wei period, hailing from the prestigious Yingchuan Zhong clan (颍川钟氏). She was the elder sister of Grand Commandant Zhong Yao (钟繇, Chung Dao — Grand Tutor of Wei and legendary master of standard regular script calligraphy) and the aunt of General Zhong Hui (钟会).
Lady Zhong was wed into the Guo clan of Taiyuan, giving birth to Guo Yuan (郭援, Quách Viện). Endowed with extraordinary intellectual discernment and historical insight characteristic of the Zhong clan, she was deeply distressed when her ambitious son Guo Yuan accepted a generalship under Yuan Shang and allied with the Southern Xiongnu Chanyu Gao Gan to invade Guanzhong in 202 AD. Aware that her brother Zhong Yao was directing Cao Cao’s defenses in the west, Lady Zhong repeatedly admonished Guo Yuan against reckless treachery and overweening pride. When Guo Yuan perished at the Battle of Pingyang at the hands of Pang De, Lady Zhong bore the tragic loss with profound philosophical dignity, earning universal admiration for placing national righteousness and family loyalty above blind ambition.
Role in Romance & Historical Chronicles
“Lady Zhong was wise, perceptive, and thoroughly versed in classical history. Though her son Guo Yuan perished fighting against his own maternal uncle Zhong Yao, she never bore resentment toward the state, maintaining the highest moral rectitude.”
— Weilüe (Brief History of Wei) & Sanguozhi
