Biography & Historical Record
Li Jun (李俊, Lý Tuấn), known by the moniker ‘River Dragon’ (Hỗn Giang Long), is one of the most prominent figures in the classic novel Water Margin (Shui Hu Zhuan). Ranking 26th among the 108 Heroes of Liangshan and representing the Heavenly Longevity Star (Thiên Thọ Tinh), he serves as the primary commander of the Liangshan navy. Originally a salt smuggler from Luzhou (廬州, Lư Châu) operating on the Yangtze River, Li Jun is depicted as a man of great stature, possessing exceptional swimming abilities and tactical brilliance in naval warfare. Unlike many of his peers who were driven to outlawry by desperation or trickery, Li Jun is characterized by his profound foresight and wisdom, eventually becoming one of the few heroes to achieve a truly successful and sovereign end.
Li Jun is widely celebrated for his loyalty to Song Jiang (宋江, Tống Giang), whom he rescued on three separate occasions before the latter joined Liangshan. His most significant contribution to the Liangshan cause was the establishment and leadership of its naval forces, which proved decisive in defending the marshland against Imperial purges. His most notable achievement, however, occurs after the Fang La (方臘, Phương Lạp) campaign. Recognizing the inevitable betrayal and corruption of the Song dynasty court, Li Jun wisely feigns illness to remain behind while the others return to the capital for rewards. He eventually sails to the kingdom of Siam (Thailand), where he establishes himself as the King of Siam, proving his capabilities as a ruler beyond the life of an outlaw.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Li Jun’s narrative arc within the Water Margin emphasizes the theme of ‘knowing when to retreat.’ While he is a fierce warrior who can stay underwater for long periods and navigate any vessel through treacherous storms, his true strength lies in his political intuition. He is the anchor of the navy, working alongside the Ruan Brothers (阮氏三雄, Nguyễn Thị Tam Hùng) and Zhang Shun (張順, Trương Thuận), but he often acts as the strategic mind that coordinates their aquatic ambushes. His departure to the seas of Southeast Asia serves as a sharp contrast to the tragic fates of his sworn brothers, positioning him as arguably the most successful character in the entire saga.
