Mu Hong (穆弘, Mục Hoằng) is a fictional character in the classical Chinese novel Water Margin. He is a wealthy and influential landlord in Jieyang Prefecture. Known as the ‘Unrestrained Vanguard’ (Mù Chōng Lán), he is characterized by his fierce temper, immense physical strength, and dominant personality. Along with his younger brother Mu Chun (穆春, Mục Xuân), he controls the local criminal and economic landscape of the Jieyang region. His introduction to the Liangshan cause occurs when he crosses paths with Song Jiang (宋江, Tống Giang) during the latter’s exile; initially adversarial, he later becomes a loyal and formidable leader among the 108 Stars of Destiny.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Mu Hong is not a character in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms; he belongs exclusively to the lore of the Water Margin. However, within the context of heroic literature, his role mirrors that of a vanguard general who excels in shock tactics and frontline combat, much like the generals found in the Three Kingdoms era.
