Biography & Historical Record
Ling Cao (died 203 AD) was a military general serving under the warlord Sun Ce and later his successor Sun Quan during the late Eastern Han dynasty. Hailing from Yuhang Commandery in Wu Commandery, Ling Cao was known for his exceptional physical strength, daring bravery, and loyalty. He joined Sun Ce early during the conquest of Jiangdong, demonstrating immense martial prowess in frontline battles against regional opponents such as Liu Yao, Wang Lang, and various local bandits. His combat capabilities and reliability earned him a prominent place among the military commanders of the emerging state of Eastern Wu.
Following Sun Ce’s tragic death, Ling Cao continued to serve Sun Quan with unwavering dedication, participating in major campaigns to expand and secure Wu’s territories along the Yangtze River. In 203 AD, during Sun Quan’s military campaign against the warlord Huang Zu in Jiangxia, Ling Cao led the vanguard forces, displaying fearless valor by breaking through enemy lines and capturing defensive positions. However, during the height of the battle, while pressing deep into enemy territory, he was struck down and killed by an arrow shot by Gan Ning, who was then serving under Huang Zu. His heroic sacrifice on the battlefield paved the way for his son, Ling Tong, who later grew up to become one of Eastern Wu’s most celebrated generals.
