Biography & Historical Record
Liu Bi was a prominent military chieftain of the Yellow Turban remnants in Runan Commandery during the late Eastern Han dynasty. Following the collapse of the primary Yellow Turban Rebellion led by Zhang Jue in 184 AD, regional factions of the uprising continued to operate independently throughout the Central Plains. Documented in Chen Shou’s official dynastic history Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi – Book of Wei, Biography of Cao Cao, Biography of Liu Bei) and Sima Guang’s Zizhi Tongjian, Liu Bi and his fellow chieftain Gong Du commanded tens of thousands of insurgent soldiers in the Yingchuan and Runan regions, resisting regional warlords and maintaining control over local mountainous strongholds.
In 196 AD, Cao Cao launched a major military campaign to pacify the Yellow Turban remnants in Runan and Yingchuan. Liu Bi and his forces were initially defeated, but they retreated into the difficult terrain and managed to preserve their core military strength. By 200 AD, during the monumental confrontation between Cao Cao and Yuan Shao at the Battle of Guandu, Liu Bi saw an opportunity to strike back. He allied with Yuan Shao, who dispatched Liu Bei to Runan to coordinate with the local insurgents and open a southern front against Cao Cao’s rear supply lines in Xuchang. Liu Bi warmly welcomed Liu Bei, placing his forces under Liu Bei’s command and actively raiding Cao Cao’s rear territories.
In 201 AD, following his crushing victory over Yuan Shao at Guandu, Cao Cao personally led a punitive expedition south to eliminate Liu Bei and pacify Runan once and for all. Facing Cao Cao’s overwhelming elite veteran forces, the allied rebel army was decisively outmatched. During the ensuing Battle of Runan, Cao Cao’s generals mounted a fierce multi-pronged encirclement. Liu Bi fought valiantly alongside Liu Bei, attempting to break through the encirclement. However, the rebel forces collapsed under the heavy assault of Cao Cao’s cavalry. Liu Bi fell in battle while fiercely defending his ground and attempting to ensure Liu Bei’s safe escape, concluding his long career as a prominent Yellow Turban resistance leader.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Chapters 26, 28, and 31 of Luo Guanzhong’s classic 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Liu Bi is portrayed as a loyal and noble-hearted Yellow Turban commander who reveres Guan Yu and sacrifices his own life on the battlefield to save Liu Bei from the onslaught of Gao Lan.
In Chapter 26, when Guan Yu is temporarily serving under Cao Cao, Cao Cao dispatches Guan Yu to suppress the Yellow Turban remnants in Runan led by Liu Bi and Gong Du. When the armies meet, Liu Bi rides out and addresses Guan Yu with deep reverence, declaring: ‘We know of your incomparable righteousness and honor, General. We only took up arms to oppose Cao Cao because he usurps imperial power and oppresses the Emperor. Our true hearts belong to Imperial Uncle Liu Bei, who is currently staying with Yuan Shao in Hebei.’ Touched by Liu Bi’s sincerity and loyalty to his sworn brother, Guan Yu refrains from attacking and deliberately allows Liu Bi and Gong Du to retreat unharmed back into their fortress.
In Chapter 28, following Guan Yu’s legendary journey crossing five passes and slaying six generals, Liu Bi and Gong Du officially welcome Liu Bei to Runan. They willingly yield supreme command of their entire several-thousand-strong host to Liu Bei, providing him with a vital territorial base and manpower to rebuild his forces after the collapse of Xu Province.
The tragic climax of Liu Bi’s life occurs in Chapter 31 during the Battle of Runan. Cao Cao personally arrives with a massive army to crush Liu Bei’s base. Liu Bei’s forces fall into a devastating ambush orchestrated by Cao Cao’s commanders. As Liu Bei flees in desperation, his retreat is suddenly blocked by the formidable Wei vanguard general Gao Lan, who cuts down Gong Du in front of Liu Bei’s eyes. Seeing Liu Bei trapped and about to be captured or slain, Liu Bi charges forward with raised sabre, shouting defiantly: ‘I will fight to the death to save my Lord!’ Liu Bi engages Gao Lan in a ferocious duel, but after just three bouts of intense combat, Liu Bi is struck down and killed by Gao Lan’s spear. Moments later, Zhao Yun arrives like a bolt of lightning, slaying Gao Lan and rescuing Liu Bei. Liu Bi’s heroic self-sacrifice is remembered in the novel as a poignant testament to his absolute loyalty and devotion to Liu Bei.
