Biography & Historical Record
Ma Zun was a military officer and regional administrator serving the state of Cao Wei during the Three Kingdoms period. He served as the Administrator of Tianshui Commandery in Liang Province during the reign of Emperor Cao Rui.
In 228 AD, Zhuge Liang launched Shu Han’s First Northern Expedition, invading Wei territory and causing widespread panic across the western border. Many surrounding commanderies surrendered to Shu Han without resistance. At the time, Ma Zun was on an inspection tour of Tianshui Commandery alongside his talented subordinate officer Jiang Wei and other local staff. Suspecting that Jiang Wei and his fellow officers were secretly colluding with Zhuge Liang to betray the commandery, Ma Zun grew deeply paranoid. Under the cover of night, Ma Zun abandoned his subordinates and secretly fled to Shanggui Castle to fortify himself. When Jiang Wei and his group discovered Ma Zun’s flight and attempted to follow him to Shanggui, Ma Zun shut the city gates against them and branded them as traitors.
Shut out by Ma Zun and refused entry at both Shanggui and Jicheng, Jiang Wei was driven into a desperate corner with nowhere else to turn, eventually surrendering to Zhuge Liang. Historically, after Zhuge Liang was forced to retreat following the loss at Jieting, Sima Yi and Wei forces suppressed the region. Ma Zun was reprimanded for fleeing his post and making false accusations against loyal officers, ultimately receiving heavy official punishment.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Ma Zun appears in Chapters 92 and 93 as the incompetent and suspicious Grand Administrator of Tianshui. When Zhuge Liang’s First Northern Expedition advances, Ma Zun panic-strickenly considers surrendering until Jiang Wei devises a brilliant counter-ambush at Jicheng that repels Zhao Yun’s force. Deeply impressed, Ma Zun initially relies on Jiang Wei’s tactical counsel. However, Zhuge Liang recognizes Jiang Wei’s genius and formulates a clever stratagem to alienate them: he releases captured soldiers to spread rumors that Jiang Wei has defected, while sending Xiahou Mao’s former officers disguised as Jiang Wei to raid nearby towns. Consumed by jealousy and paranoia, Ma Zun falls completely for the ruse. When Jiang Wei returns to Tianshui, Ma Zun orders archers to rain arrows upon him, shouting: ‘Traitor Jiang Wei! Do you dare try to trick me into opening the gates?’ This cowardly betrayal forces Jiang Wei to defect to Shu Han. Later, as Zhuge Liang besieges Tianshui, Jiang Wei uses an intimate knowledge of the city’s defenses to help Shu forces storm the gates, causing Ma Zun and Liang Qian to flee in disgrace toward the Qiang tribal lands.
