Biography & Literary Record
Master Lao (南华老仙, Nam Hoa Lão Tiên) is the mysterious “Old Immortal of the South” who appears in Chapter 1 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In the novel he has no personal name: he meets Zhang Jiao (张角, Trương Giác) (also called Zhang Jue), gifts three volumes of the Taiping Jing (太平经 / Essential Art of Great Peace), and vanishes. That single gift becomes the supernatural origin of the Way of Peace and the Yellow Turban Rebellion.
Critical framing: This page is about the novel immortal Nan Hua Lao Xian, not a dump of the historical philosopher Laozi (老子, Lão Tử). Do not treat Shiji anecdotes—Li Zong as son, Confucius asking about ritual, Yin Xi at Hangu Pass and the Dao De Jing—as Family or Friends of this character. Those belong to Laozi’s separate classical biography. Folk tradition (e.g. later huaben) sometimes identifies the southern immortal with Zhuang Zhou (庄子 / 庄周, Trang Chu / Trang Tử); Koei’s English localization blends Laozi/Zhuangzi associations under the game name “Master Lao.”
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Chapter 1 — Gift of the Taiping Jing: After Zhang Jiao and his brothers fail the imperial examinations, an elderly hermit finds Zhang in a cave (or mountain retreat). He presents three sacred volumes, saying they contain the Way of Heaven and that mastery of them can make one the teacher of emperors and the healer of the world. Asked for his name, he answers only that he is an old immortal from the southern lands (南华老仙) and disappears. Zhang Jiao studies the books, gathers followers with healing rites, proclaims “The Azure Heaven is dead; the Yellow Heaven shall rise,” and launches the Yellow Turban Rebellion of 184.
Later tradition & games: Folk identification with Zhuangzi; Koei Dynasty Warriors / Warriors Orochi treat Master Lao as a Mystic who tests Zhang Jiao (and others) before confirming the Way of Peace scriptures. Game lore expands a one-scene novel device into a recurring immortal archetype—still not historical Laozi’s court biography.
Master Lao (南华老仙, Nam Hoa Lão Tiên) — Literary Timeline
Encounter with Zhang Jiao
Appears as unnamed southern immortal; gifts three volumes of the Taiping Jing; vanishes. Direct literary spark for the Way of Peace and Yellow Turbans.
Zhuangzi ID and Mystic officer
Later storytelling links him to Zhuang Zhou; games name him Master Lao and cast him as an invincible Mystic tester—still literary/game identity, not Shiji Laozi.
No historical person holds the title 南华老仙 as Zhang Jiao’s scripture-giver; the historical Taiping Jing tradition is separate from this novel scene.
Key Relationships
Family
- None in the novel. Master Lao is framed as an immortal / literary device with no father, mother, spouse, or children. Do not list Li Zong or other Shiji Laozi kin here—(tradition of historical Laozi only, not this page’s subject).
Friends
- Zhang Jiao (张角, Trương Giác) — Sole named recipient of the Taiping Jing gift in ROTK Ch.1; the bond is master-to-disciple / immortal-to-mortal, not a historical friendship.
Enemies
- No personal battlefield enemies in the novel (one-scene gift, then disappearance). Opponents of the Way of Peace belong to Zhang Jiao’s war, not to Master Lao’s brief appearance—see Other.
Other
- Zhuangzi (庄子 / 庄周, Trang Chu) — Plain text (no dedicated site post). Folk tradition sometimes equates Nan Hua Lao Xian with Zhuang Zhou’s immortal form; keep as association note, not Family.
- Laozi (老子, Lão Tử) / Koei “Master Lao” — Game English name and Daoist branding only. Classical Laozi biography (Confucius 问礼, Yin Xi, Dao De Jing) must not be pasted into Family/Friends on this page.
- Han court / Way of Peace context: The scriptures Master Lao gifts empower Zhang Jiao against the corrupt Eastern Han order under Emperor Ling (汉灵帝, Hán Linh Đế); court opposition to Yellow Turbans is historical-political context for the gift’s consequences, not a duel with the immortal.
- History: No attested “southern immortal” meeting Zhang Jiao; Taiping Dao and Yellow Turban organization are historical, the cave gift is novelistic.
In Novel
Chapter 1
- Master Lao (南华老仙, Nam Hoa Lão Tiên): Appears to Zhang Jiao (张角, Trương Giác) as an unnamed elderly hermit from the southern lands. He presents three volumes of the Taiping Jing (太平经, Thái Bình Kinh)—the Essential Art of Great Peace—declaring that the books hold the Way of Heaven and that one who masters them can become the teacher of emperors and save the world. Asked his identity, he answers only with the title Nan Hua Lao Xian and vanishes. Zhang Jiao’s study of the gift founds the Way of Peace and leads to the Yellow Turban Rebellion. The novel never gives him a secular name, family, or further scenes.
- Framing note: Later folk tales may link this immortal to Zhuangzi (庄子 / 庄周, Trang Chu); Koei games call him Master Lao and mix Laozi/Zhuangzi branding. Those are reception history—not the same as inserting historical Laozi’s son Li Zong, Confucius, or Yin Xi into this character’s Family/Friends.
In History
Summary
- The title 南华老仙 (Nam Hoa Lão Tiên) as Zhang Jiao’s scripture-giver is a literary creation of Romance of the Three Kingdoms (and later folk elaboration). No Hou Hanshu or SGZ passage records such a meeting.
- Historically, Zhang Jiao led the Way of Peace / Yellow Turban movement (184 AD). Traditions about a Taiping Jing exist in Daoist and historical discussion, but they are not identical to Luo Guanzhong’s cave-gift scene.
Historical Record
- Hou Hanshu and related chronicles cover Zhang Jiao and the Yellow Turbans; they do not authenticate Nan Hua Lao Xian as a historical person.
- Shiji / classical lives of Laozi (老子) and Zhuangzi (庄子) are separate intellectual histories. Citing Li Zong, Confucius’s visit, or Yin Xi here as if they were this novel figure’s kin or friends is a category error—keep them off this page’s Family/Friends.
- Koei “Master Lao” is a modern game identity built on the novel immortal plus Daoist name recognition.
