Biography & Historical Record
Qin Ming (秦明, Tần Minh), known by his nickname Thunderbolt (霹雳火), is a fictional character in the classic Chinese novel Water Margin. He ranks 7th among the 108 Stars of Destiny and is recognized as one of the Five Tiger Generals of Liangshan. Initially serving as a military commander (Bingma Zongguan) in Qingzhou, he was renowned for his ferocious combat style and his signature weapon, a heavy iron wolf-tooth mace. His impulsive and volatile temper earned him his nickname, as his strikes were said to be as explosive and swift as thunderbolts.
“He carries a wolf-tooth mace that weighs tens of jin, and his roar sounds like thunder shaking the earth. When he strikes, no one can withstand the blow.”
After being manipulated by Song Jiang (宋江, Tống Giang) and the outlaws into deserting the government, his family was executed by the governor of Qingzhou. With no path back to his former life, he was forced to join the Liangshan rebels. He became a core commander, leading the vanguard in numerous campaigns, displaying unmatched bravery against both the Liao invaders and the southern rebels of Fang La (方腊, Phương Lạp).
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
As a character from Water Margin, Qin Ming does not appear in the historical Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which takes place during the late Eastern Han and Three Kingdoms periods (169–280 AD). However, his strategic role as a vanguard general mirrors those of iconic warriors like Zhang Fei (张飞, Trương Phi) or Xu Chu (许褚, Hứa Chử), defined by extreme physical strength and unwavering loyalty to his brotherhood.
