Biography & Historical Record
Huyan Zhuo (呼延灼, Hô Diên Chước) is a legendary military commander in the Chinese classic novel Water Margin. He is a direct descendant of the Northern Song general Huyan Zan (呼延赞, Hô Diên Tán). Serving as an Imperial Guard Commander, he is tasked by the corrupt official Gao Qiu (高俅, Cao Cầu) to lead a punitive expedition against the outlaws of Liangshan Marsh. He is famous for his mastery of the double steel whips and his tactical invention, the ‘Chain-linked Cavalry’ (連環馬, Liánhuán Mǎ), which links horses together to act as a formidable battering ram against infantry.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While Huyan Zhuo is a character from Water Margin and not Romance of the Three Kingdoms, he represents the archetype of the ‘Loyal General’ caught in the moral ambiguity of a corrupt court. His transition from a loyalist general to a leader of the 108 Stars of Destiny mirrors the tragic fall of the Northern Song military structure.
