Biography & Historical Record
Shi Yi (士壹, Sĩ Nhất) was a powerful frontier warlord, commandery administrator, and prominent patriarch of the Shi clan of Jiaozhi (士氏家族). He was the second son of Rinan Administrator Shi Ci (士赐, Sĩ Tứ), the younger brother of regional hegemon Shi Xie (士燮, Sĩ Nhiếp — King Sĩ / Marquis of Longdu), and brother to Shi Wu (士䵋) and Shi Wei (士微).
During the chaotic collapse of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Shi Xie divided the governorships of the southern commanderies among his capable brothers to establish total regional autonomy. Shi Yi was appointed Grand Administrator of Hepu (合浦太守), governing the strategic coastal commandery famous for its pearl fisheries and maritime silk trade routes. Alongside his brothers, Shi Yi maintained peace and prosperity across Jiaozhou for over forty years, sheltering thousands of northern scholar-refugees. Following Shi Xie’s death in 226 AD, Shi Xie’s son Shi Hui (士徽) resisted Sun Quan’s direct imperial annexation. When Wu General Lü Dai invaded, Shi Yi and his family were lured with promises of pardon, only to be arrested and executed, marking the tragic downfall of the Shi dynasty in the South.
