Biography & Historical Record
Suo Chao (索超, Sách Siêu) is a prominent fictional character in the classical Chinese novel Water Margin (Shui Hu Zhuan). Originally serving as a Major (Ti-xia) in the Daming Prefecture military under Governor Liang Zhongshu (梁中书, Lương Trung Thư), Suo Chao earned the nickname ‘Urgent Vanguard’ (急先锋, Jí Xiānfēng) for his ferocious and headstrong nature in combat. He is a master of the battle-axe and is famously known for his intense duel with Yang Zhi (杨志, Dương Chí) in Daming Prefecture, which ended in a stalemate that earned the mutual respect of both warriors. Following the fall of Daming Prefecture and the machinations of the Liangshan outlaws, Suo Chao eventually defected to the side of the 108 Stars of Destiny. As the 19th ranked hero, he serves as one of the Eight Tiger Cub Vanguard Generals of Liangshan.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While Suo Chao does not appear in the historical Romance of the Three Kingdoms, his archetypal portrayal reflects the ‘General of Valor’ trope common in traditional Chinese military literature, emphasizing loyalty and personal prowess over political nuance.
