Biography & Historical Record
Wang Fen (王芬, Vương Phần) was a high-ranking nobleman and official of the Western Jin Dynasty. He was the son of the Grand Protector Wang Xiang (王祥, Vương Tường) and Lady Duan (段氏), and younger brother of Wang Lie (王烈). Following the premature death of his elder brother and the passing of his venerable father in 268 AD, Wang Fen inherited his father’s illustrious noble title, becoming the Marquis / Duke of Suiping (睢陵侯 / 睢陵公).
Serving during the reign of Emperor Wu of Jin (Sima Yan / 司马炎), Wang Fen upheld his father’s famous testamentary instructions: to avoid lavish burials, reject political ostentation, and preserve uncompromised integrity in public office. His steady stewardship of the Langya Wang patrimony laid the vital political foundations that allowed his nephews and cousins — including Wang Dao and Wang Dun — to rise as the dominant architects of the Eastern Jin dynasty.
Role in Romance & Historical Chronicles
“When Grand Protector Wang Xiang passed away, he instructed Wang Fen: ‘Bury me in simple robes, erect no lavish mound, and let our sons serve the realm with pure hands.’ Wang Fen followed these words to the letter, preserving the eternal honor of Suiping.”
