Biography & Historical Record
Xiahou Jie (died 208 AD) is a fictional military officer appearing in Luo Guanzhong’s classic 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In the novel’s narrative, he is depicted as a minor officer serving under the northern warlord Cao Cao and a member of the elite Xiahou clan. In strict historical reality, Xiahou Jie does not appear in Chen Shou’s Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi) or any authentic Eastern Han historical records; he was invented by Luo Guanzhong to serve as a dramatic foil during the iconic showdown at Changban Bridge (Cầu Trường Bản).
In Chapter 42 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, following Zhao Yun’s heroic rescue of infant A’Dou through fifty divisions of enemy forces, Cao Cao personally led his grand army in pursuit toward Dangyang. At Changban Bridge, Zhang Fei stood alone on horseback atop the bridge, wielding his Serpent Lance with his eyes wide and beard bristling, guarding the rear for Liu Bei’s retreating forces. As Cao Cao’s vanguard army arrived at the riverbank, Cao Cao recalled Guan Yu’s earlier warning at the Battle of Baima that Zhang Fei could decapitate an enemy general among a million soldiers as easily as taking something from his pocket. Nervous and cautious, Cao Cao ordered his army to halt and hold their positions.
Positioned directly beside Cao Cao, Xiahou Jie witnessed Zhang Fei’s intimidating, thunderous stance atop Changban Bridge. Suddenly, Zhang Fei roared like thunder across the riverbank, ‘I am Zhang Yide of Yan! Who dares to come forward and fight me to the death?’ The terrifying roar echoed through the sky, causing the water of the river to reverse its flow. Terrified by the raw power of Zhang Fei’s shout, Xiahou Jie’s heart ruptured in pure panic. Overcome with violent terror, Xiahou Jie fell off his warhorse onto the ground, dying instantly on the battlefield. Witnessing Xiahou Jie’s sudden death from fright, Cao Cao turned his horse around and fled westward in panic, triggering a massive, chaotic retreat among the thousands of Wei soldiers.

Overwhelmed by sheer terror, Xiahou Jie’s gall bursts, causing him to fall dead from his horse. His dramatic death frightens Cao Cao into fleeing, throwing the entire army into a chaotic retreat and securing Liu Bei’s escape.
