Historical Life of Xiahou Shi, Lady Xiahou
The turbulent era of the Three Kingdoms produced many unexpected alliances and cross-factional family ties. Among the most intriguing figures was Xiahou Shi, Lady Xiahou, a noblewoman of the esteemed Xiahou clan of Cao Wei and niece of the renowned general Xiahou Yuan.
According to the Records of the Three Kingdoms (annotated from the Weilüe), in 208 AD (the 13th year of Jian’an), she was gathering firewood near Qiao when she was captured by the Shu Han general Zhang Fei. Recognizing her noble lineage, Zhang Fei married her with full honors rather than treating her as a captive, integrating her into the highest echelons of Liu Bei’s camp.
