Biography & Historical Record
Xiahouji (active early 3rd century AD) was a noblewoman of the late Eastern Han dynasty and early Three Kingdoms period, hailing from Qiao Commandery in Peiguo. She was a niece of the prominent Cao Wei general Xiahou Yuan and a cousin of Xiahou Ba. Around 200 AD during the chaos of the civil wars, while gathering firewood in the countryside of Hanzhong, the young Xiahouji was captured by the Shu general Zhang Fei, who discovered she was of noble birth and subsequently married her.
Despite being a member of the rival Cao Wei clan and the niece of Xiahou Yuan—whom Zhang Fei’s fellow Five Tiger General Huang Zhong later slew at the Battle of Mount Dingjun—Xiahouji lived faithfully with Zhang Fei in Shu Han, bearing him children, including two daughters who both became Empresses of Shu Han as wives of Emperor Liu Shan (Empress Zhang and Junior Empress Zhang). Following Xiahou Yuan’s tragic death at Mount Dingjun, Xiahouji demonstrated deep family loyalty by petitioning for and personally overseeing a proper burial for her fallen uncle. Her unique life bridged the bitter enmity between the rival states of Wei and Shu through matrimonial ties.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s epic historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Xiahouji’s dramatic backstory is highlighted in Chapter 71. When Xiahou Yuan is slain by Huang Zhong at Mount Dingjun, Xiahouji’s sorrow and her subsequent plea to bury her uncle emphasize the poignant human tragedies and familial bonds that transcend battlefield loyalties during the Three Kingdoms era.
