Yang Chun (杨春, Dương Xuân) is a fictional character featured in the classic Chinese literary masterpiece Water Margin (Shui Hu Zhuan). He is one of the 108 Heroes of Liangshan, ranked 73rd overall and occupying the position of the Earth Hidden Star (地隐星, Dì Yǐn Xīng). Known by his nickname ‘White Flower Snake’ (白花蛇, Bái Huā Shé), he originally appears as a mountain chieftain at Mount Shaohua, serving alongside Zhu Wu (朱武, Chu Vũ) and Chen Da (陈达, Trần Đạt).
Yang Chun is portrayed as a loyal and capable warrior who possesses considerable martial skill, particularly in the use of the spear. After a series of encounters with Shi Jin (史进, Sử Tiến), Yang Chun and his companions pledge their allegiance to the Liangshan cause. Following the formal organization of the 108 stars, he serves as a mid-level commander, participating in the amnesty campaign authorized by the Song Emperor to suppress rebel forces such as the Liao and the insurrection led by Fang La (方腊, Phương Lạp).
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
While Yang Chun does not exist in the historical Three Kingdoms period, his archetypal role in the Liangshan fraternity mirrors the ‘brotherhood’ tropes often romanticized in Chinese military folklore. His character serves as a secondary support leader who emphasizes the structural hierarchy and loyalty-bound ethics of the outlaw collective.
