Life & Career of Zhang Cheng in Eastern Wu
Zhang Cheng (178–244), courtesy name Zhongsi, was a distinguished military general and scholar of Eastern Wu during the Three Kingdoms era. As the eldest son of the foundational statesman Zhang Zhao, he combined high moral standards with sharp strategic acumen. He governed the pivotal commandery of Ruixu, advanced to the rank of General Who Conquers the North (Zhenbei Jiangjun), and received the noble title of Marquis of Duting from Emperor Sun Quan.
Renowned for his extensive literary collection and ability to identify talent, he accurately foresaw the ascendance of younger figures like Zhuge Ke and Gu Tan. Beyond civil administration, he proved his military capability on the northern frontier. In 241 AD, he co-commanded an expeditionary force against Huaiyin, capturing thousands of opposing troops and defending Wu territory against northern incursions.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s historical novel, he appears primarily as an esteemed scholar-official upholding the authority and dignity of the Sun family court in Jiangdong.
