Zhang Ni (died 254 AD), courtesy name Boyuan, was a military general and official of the state of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period. Born in Nanchong, Ba Commandery, Zhang Ni rose from humble local origins to become one of Shu Han’s most reliable and courageous commanders. Early in his career, he demonstrated exceptional valor and resourcefulness by suppressing local bandits and quelling rebellions in the southern commanderies. His ability to pacify turbulent ethnic tribes and win the trust of local populations earned him high renown throughout the state.
When Zhuge Liang launched his famous Southern Campaigns against the Nanman tribes, Zhang Ni played a pivotal role as a vanguard commander, enduring great hardships, overcoming venomous traps, and securing vital footholds for the imperial army. In Luo Guanzhong’s epic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zhang Ni is portrayed as a fearless, loyal, and fiercely devoted general of Shu Han who distinguishes himself through unwavering service in both the southern campaigns and northern expeditions. Introduced during Zhuge Liang’s Southern Campaign in Chapter 87, Zhang Ni bravely faces treacherous terrain, captures rebel leaders, and proves his tactical worth under extreme conditions.
His most poignant and heroic depiction occurs in Chapter 109 during Jiang Wei’s sixth northern expedition. Although suffering from chronic illness and advanced age, Zhang Ni insists on leading the vanguard against the Wei army under Chen Tai. Surrounded by overwhelming forces and facing certain death, Zhang Ni fights valiantly to his last breath, executing enemy officers before falling in battle, earning the profound grief and mourning of both Jiang Wei and the entire Shu court.
