Biography & Historical Record
Zhang Zhen (张震, Trương Chấn) was a high-ranking nobleman, military officer, and imperial in-law of the Eastern Wu Dynasty. He possessed one of the most illustrious pedigrees in the entire state of Wu: his paternal grandfather was the venerable founding statesman Zhang Zhao (张昭, Trương Chiêu), his father was the valiant general and scholar Zhang Cheng (张承, Trương Thừa), his maternal grandfather was Prime Minister Zhuge Jin (诸葛瑾, Gia Cát Cẩn), and his sister was Empress Zhang (张皇后), consort of Emperor Sun Liang.
Inheriting his father’s noble title as Marquis of Duxiang (都乡侯), Zhang Zhen served as an imperial chamberlain and palace guard commander. In 258 AD, amidst the tyrannical reign of the regent Sun Chen (孙綝), Emperor Sun Liang and senior loyalists plotted to eliminate the despot. When the plot was exposed through betrayal, Sun Chen launched a preemptive strike, deposing the young emperor, banishing Empress Zhang, and ruthlessly executing loyalists including Zhang Zhen, extinguishing an eminent branch of the Zhang lineage.
