Zhou Fang (died 229 AD), courtesy name Ziyi, was a military general and official of the state of Eastern Wu during the Three Kingdoms period. Originally serving as the Administrator of Poyang, Zhou Fang is most famous for orchestrating one of the most brilliant psychological warfare deceptions in the history of the Three Kingdoms, known as the Defection of Zhou Fang. To lure the prominent Cao Wei general Cao Xiu into a fatal trap, Zhou Fang pretended to defect to Wei by cutting his hair and sending successive false surrender letters, enduring public humiliation and widespread suspicion while maintaining his secret loyalty to Eastern Wu. His elaborate ruse successfully convinced Cao Xiu to lead an army deep into Wu territory at Shiting in 228 AD. When Cao Xiu arrived, the Wu forces commanded by Lu Xun launched a devastating ambush, inflicting a catastrophic defeat on the Wei army. For his immense contribution, Zhou Fang was heavily rewarded and created the Marquis of Guanzhong. He passed away the following year in 229 AD.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zhou Fang’s legendary ruse is vividly dramatized in Chapters 95 and 96. When Sun Quan seeks a way to defeat the invading Wei forces under Cao Xiu, Zhou Fang volunteers to execute a dangerous scheme of feigned defection. He publicly cuts his hair in front of his officials and soldiers to demonstrate absolute despair and betrayal toward Wu, sending a secret messenger to Cao Xiu. Despite initial skepticism from Sima Yi and Jia Kui, Cao Xiu falls completely for the deception, leading to the historic Battle of Shiting where Wei forces are utterly routed by Lu Xun and Zhou Fang’s coordinated counterattack.
