Biography & Historical Record
He Man was a prominent military leader of the Yellow Turban remnant forces operating in the Runan and Yingchuan commanderies during the late Eastern Han dynasty. Following the suppression of the main Yellow Turban leaders—Zhang Jue, Zhang Bao, and Zhang Liang—in 184 AD, scattered remnants maintained active insurgencies across various provinces. He Man, alongside fellow commanders such as He Yi, Liu Pi, and Huang Shao, rallied tens of thousands of followers in the fertile agricultural regions of Runan and Yingchuan. These allied Yellow Turban bands amassed formidable military strength, occasionally forming opportunistic alliances with major regional warlords including Yuan Shu and Sun Jian to maintain their independence.
In the second month of 196 AD, the warlord Cao Cao launched a major military campaign into Runan and Yingchuan to crush the Yellow Turban remnants and secure the region’s agricultural resources. Facing the superior discipline and combat effectiveness of Cao Cao’s regular army, the remnant coalition suffered decisive defeats. Historical records in Chen Shou’s Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi – Book of Wei – Annals of Emperor Wu) note that commanders Liu Pi and Huang Shao were killed in action, while He Man and He Yi surrendered their remaining forces to Cao Cao. Following his capitulation in 196 AD, He Man disappears from authentic historical records.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, He Man appears in Chapter 12 as a formidable Yellow Turban warrior boasting the grand title ‘The Devil Who Shoots Across the Sky’ (Jie Tian Ye Cha). Represented as a towering physical powerhouse measuring over nine feet tall, wearing green armor with a yellow turban, and wielding a heavy iron staff, he challenges Cao Cao’s forces at Mount Yang. After engaging Cao Hong in an exhausting 50-bout duel on foot, He Man is outsmarted by Cao Hong’s feigned retreat strategy and slain by a swift counter-strike.
