The Life and Campaigns of General Qiao Rui
Qiao Rui was a prominent military general and vanguard commander serving under the warlord Yuan Shu during the tumultuous late Eastern Han dynasty. Originating from Suiyang in Liang Commandery, he earned a reputation as one of Yuan Shu’s most trusted military stalwarts, frequently operating alongside fellow senior commanders such as Zhang Xun, Ji Ling, and Yue Jiu during major campaigns across the Huainan and Huaiyang territories.
In 197 AD, following Yuan Shu’s controversial self-proclamation as Emperor of the Zhongshi dynasty, a massive seven-pronged offensive was launched to conquer Xu Province and eliminate Lu Bu. Entrusted with the third assault column, he marched thousands of infantry and cavalry directly toward Xiapi. However, sophisticated diplomatic subversion orchestrated by Chen Deng caused allied rebel leaders Han Xian and Yang Feng to switch allegiances mid-battle. The sudden betrayal threw the invading columns into utter disarray, forcing the battered vanguard to retreat back across the Huai River.
Later that autumn, Chancellor Cao Cao mobilized a powerful coalition alongside Liu Bei, Sun Ce, and Lu Bu to crush the nascent Zhongshi court. Panicked by the imperial expedition, Yuan Shu fled south with his treasury, leaving his frontline defensive garrisons at Qishan under the command of his senior officers to halt the coalition’s rapid progress.
Portrayal in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s classic historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the loyal vanguard general takes center stage during the defense of Qishan. Riding out with spear raised before the assembled hosts, he defiantly challenged the advancing imperial vanguard. Cao Cao’s fearsome champion Xiahou Dun galloped forward to engage him in mounted single combat. Despite valiant effort, Xiahou Dun overpowered Qiao Rui after three intense bouts, running him through with a lethal spear strike.
The sudden fall of Qiao Rui completely broke the defenders’ fighting spirit, enabling Cao Cao’s coalition to capture the stronghold and surround Shouchun, marking a pivotal moment in the conflicts of the Three Kingdoms period.
