Biography of Shi Cuan & Historical Record
Shi Cuan was a senior military officer and imperial inspector of Cao Wei during the late Three Kingdoms period. Known for his tactical resolve and battlefield command, he served as a primary aide under Grand General Deng Ai. Documented in Chen Shou’s Records of the Three Kingdoms and Sima Guang’s Zizhi Tongjian, he was initially assigned by Regent Sima Zhao to oversee military operations on the western front.
During the historic conquest of Shu by Wei in 263, Shi Cuan embraced Deng Ai’s daring strategy to bypass the fortified defenses at Jiange. He marched through seven hundred li of untamed mountain terrain along the Yinping trail, rappelling down cliffs wrapped in felt blankets. Following the unexpected fall of Jiangyou, Deng Ai dispatched his son Deng Zhong and his trusted major to strike Zhuge Zhan’s imperial guards at Mianzhu. After an initial setback, the two commanders rallied their shock troops under threat of execution, shattered the enemy lines, and eliminated Zhuge Zhan to secure the road to Chengdu.
Following Liu Shan’s capitulation, Deng Ai appointed his trusted subordinate as acting Inspector of Yi Province. However, internal political rivalry soon unfolded. Sima Zhao grew wary of Deng Ai’s independent decrees, leading Grand General Zhong Hui and Military Supervisor Wei Guan to arrest the top commanders in early 264. Amid the bloody Chengdu mutiny that followed, Wei Guan dispatched General Tian Xu to intercept the prisoner convoy, executing the victorious generals near Mianzhu.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the officer is portrayed as Deng Ai’s fierce vanguard leader across Chapters 116 through 119. In historical fiction, Shi Cuan is remembered as a fearless commander who breached Shu’s last defensive line before falling victim to post-war court intrigue and factional jealousy.
