Who Was Tian Xu? Historical Background
Tian Xu was a military officer of Cao Wei during the late Three Kingdoms period. He originated from Wuzhong County, Youbeiping Commandery. As a clan descendant of the famed northern strategist Tian Chou, he inherited the noble title of Marquis of Guannei to sustain his family’s ancestral rites.
Rising through the ranks, he served under General Deng Ai during the massive expedition against Shu Han in 263 AD. When the vanguard navigated the perilous Yinping trail, the officer hesitated before sheer cliffs. Enraged by this reluctance, Deng Ai threatened him with summary execution for insubordination before ultimately forcing him to march forward.
The Mianzhu Ambush and Deng Ai’s Demise
Following the fall of Chengdu and the subsequent turmoil of 264 AD involving Zhong Hui, military supervisor Wei Guan plotted to eliminate Deng Ai. Knowing the bitter grudge between them, Wei Guan urged the commander to seek vengeance for the earlier humiliation. Tian Xu seized this opportunity, leading a detachment of five hundred cavalry to intercept Deng Ai and his son Deng Zhong east of Mianzhu, executing them both.
Portrayal in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In the historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the narrative dramatically preserves this fateful encounter. Instigated by Wei Guan to avenge his near-death at Yinping, the rider ambushed the carriage at Mianzhu, fulfilling his revenge and cementing his place in the historical records of the campaign.
