The Life and Downfall of Sun Lang
Sun Lang (courtesy name Zao’an) was an imperial nobleman and the fifth son of the foundational warlord Sun Jian during the turbulent Three Kingdoms era. Born to a concubine rather than Lady Wu, he stood apart from his four renowned half-brothers: Sun Ce, Sun Quan, Sun Yi, and Sun Kuang. Recorded in historical chronicles, he was initially appointed as General of the Household (Zhonglangjiang) to supervise crucial riverfront garrisons along the Yangtze River.
Military Disgrace at the Battle of Dongkou
In 222 AD, Emperor Wen of Wei (Cao Pi) launched a massive three-pronged invasion against Eastern Wu. Mobilized under senior commander Lü Fan to secure strategic defensive perimeters at Dongkou, the young commander was tasked with guarding logistical supply stores. However, during the tactical operations, Sun Lang violated strict camp regulations and accidentally ignited a massive blaze. The resulting fire consumed his own army’s weapon depots, warships, and granaries, creating widespread chaos along the Wu frontline.
Following the disaster, Chief Commander Lü Fan reported the catastrophic breach of discipline to Sun Quan. Although strict martial law demanded immediate execution, Sun Quan commuted the death penalty out of respect for their shared father. Instead, Sun Quan issued an imperial decree stripping his younger brother of all military ranks, banishing him from the imperial clan, changing his surname to Ding, and placing him under permanent house arrest for the remainder of his life.
Depiction in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s classic novel, Sun Lang is introduced as Sun Jian’s youngest son. During the defense against Cao Wei’s fleet, he acts impulsively during night operations, triggering the accidental blaze that nearly compromises general Xu Sheng’s battle lines. His subsequent punishment highlights Eastern Wu’s unyielding adherence to military discipline, demonstrating that even imperial royalty could not escape retribution when martial law was broken.
