Biography & Historical Record of Wu Gang
Wu Gang (historically recorded as Wu Xi) was an active military officer during the turbulent late Eastern Han dynasty. Originating from Xiagui in Jingzhao Commandery, he initially served as a subordinate commander under the warlord Guo Si. Along with Li Jue, the regime seized violent control over the imperial court in Chang’an following Dong Zhuo’s assassination, subjecting the capital to severe instability.
As the partnership between Li Jue and his fellow general decayed into open warfare, the Guanzhong region suffered catastrophic famine and devastation. In 197 AD, recognizing that his master’s military power was rapidly crumbling and troops were deserting, the commander initiated a surprise mutiny in Meiyang. He assassinated his superior, seized command of the surviving garrison, and surrendered directly to Cao Cao. This decisive strategic surrender eliminated a lingering threat in the northwest and integrated veteran soldiers into the expanding coalition that shaped the Three Kingdoms era.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s historical epic Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the officer appears in Chapter 17 under the moniker Wu Gang. His literary portrayal directly mirrors historical records regarding the downfall of the Liangzhou remnants. By presenting his former master’s severed head as proof of fealty, he earned an official commission from the imperial chancellor, bringing closure to the chaotic Chang’an rebellion narrative.
Service Under Liangzhou Forces
Served as an officer under Guo Si during the turbulent military regency over Emperor Xian and the disastrous clashes in Chang’an.
Assassination and Defection
Led a sudden mutiny at Meiyang, eliminated Guo Si, and surrendered his army to Cao Cao to gain official imperial rank.
