Biography of Yan Yu (Shu) in History
Yan Yu (Shu), courtesy name Wenping, was an influential military official who served the state of Shu Han during the turbulent Three Kingdoms era. Rising through regional administration, he attained the position of Grand Administrator of Baxi before earning promotion to General of the Right (You Jiangjun). He gained substantial political standing through his close alliance with the powerful palace eunuch Huang Hao, who held immense sway over the imperial court.
In the final years of the dynasty, factional infighting intensified within Chengdu. Huang Hao actively sought to undermine Grand General Jiang Wei by lobbying Emperor Liu Shan to promote Yan Yu to supreme commander. Recognizing the dangerous court intrigue orchestrated around Yan Yu (Shu), Jiang Wei withdrew his core forces to Tazhong to manage agricultural colonies and avoid immediate political peril, leaving northern border defenses vulnerable.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Yan Yu (Shu) is depicted as an ambitious opportunist who relied on palace favoritism rather than battlefield merit. When the state of Cao Wei launched its massive dual invasion in 263 AD led by Deng Ai and Zhong Hui, Yan Yu was summoned to defend the capital. However, Shu Han’s reserve defenses fractured swiftly under pressure, culminating in the surrender of Emperor Liu Shan.
