Biography & Historical Record
Zhang Xun was a military general serving under the warlord Yuan Shu during the late Eastern Han Dynasty. He held the rank of General of the Left (左將軍) and was considered one of Yuan Shu’s most trusted commanders. When Yuan Shu declared himself Emperor in 197 AD, Zhang Xun was instrumental in commanding the armies tasked with defending the newly proclaimed Zhong dynasty against the coalition forces led by Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and Lu Bu.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s novel, Zhang Xun is portrayed as a loyal but ultimately outmatched general. Following Yuan Shu’s failed imperial ambition, Zhang Xun attempted to lead the remnants of the army to hold back the tide of attacking warlords, often serving as the primary antagonist’s shield against the encroaching allied forces.
