Biography of Yang Huiyu
Yang Huiyu (214–278 AD), formally honored as Empress Jingxian, was an influential noblewoman from the prominent Yang clan of Taishan during the late Three Kingdoms era and the early Western Jin dynasty. She was the daughter of Yang Dao and the sister of the celebrated commander Yang Hu. Later in life, Yang Huiyu became the third wife of Sima Shi, one of the most powerful regents of Cao Wei.
Following Sima Shi’s death, she conducted herself with exceptional dignity and virtue. When her nephew-in-law Sima Yan (Emperor Wu of Jin) established the Western Jin dynasty, he revered her as Empress Dowager Hongxun. During her time at court, she successfully persuaded the emperor to grant posthumous imperial honors to Sima Shi’s first wife, Lady Xiahou Hui, proving her political wisdom and fair-minded nature.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Yang Huiyu rarely appears on the battlefield or in high-stakes political intrigues. Instead, her name is primarily recorded within the imperial genealogy that chronicles the transition of power from the Cao Wei regime to the Sima family’s Western Jin dynasty.
