Biography & Historical Record
Xiahou Hui was an officer of Cao Wei and the sixth son of the renowned general Xiahou Yuan. Born into the influential Xiahou clan of Qiao Commandery, he grew up during the volatile Three Kingdoms era alongside his brothers Xiahou Li, Xiahou Ba, Xiahou Wei, Xiahou Rong, and Xiahou He. From his youth, Xiahou Hui was celebrated for his literary talent, sharp intellect, and exceptional eloquence in writing.
In his adult military career, Xiahou Hui served as Grand Marshal (Minister of War) in the army of Cao Wei alongside his younger brother Xiahou He. Stationed along the western border defenses, he actively participated in campaigns against the invading forces of Shu Han, playing an important role in repelling Northern Expeditions led by Zhuge Liang.
Historically, Xiahou Hui’s nephew Xiahou Xuan was a leading scholar and politician of the Pure Talk movement, and his family maintained powerful matrimonial ties with the Sima clan through his cousin Xiahou Hui (Empress Jinghuai, wife of Sima Shi).
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Xiahou Hui appears in the later chapters during Cao Wei’s defensive campaigns against Zhuge Liang’s Shu Han forces. As one of Xiahou Yuan’s talented sons who carried on the martial and administrative legacy of the Xiahou clan, he is depicted serving as an officer under Sima Yi’s command along with his brother Xiahou He. They assist in fortifying mountain passes, implementing strategic defenses, and maintaining logistical stability during Shu’s northern offensives.
